Purpose of the Writing Center

The Writing Center exists to help all students become better writers. Tutors go over papers with students, pointing out areas to improve and explaining why students should reconsider those areas. Through this process, students learn to improve their writing. The Writing Center is not an editing service but a teaching service to help students help themselves.

Purpose of Tutoring Sessions

The focus of tutoring sessions is to help writers gain one or two skills that they can apply to future writing assignments, thereby permanently improving their writing.  Simply helping writers to edit their work does not result in long-term learning.

Therefore, tutoring sessions are not intended to:

  • take the place of in-class writing instruction or discussion of writing assignments
  • correct, edit, or make papers error-free
  • guarantee results or grades; writers are always responsible for their own work.

Mutually Beneficial Learning

As peers rather than experts, tutors are learning too. Though they are hired for their strong writing skills and interest in helping others, they aren’t perfect.  Tutoring is an important learning process for both the tutee and the tutor.
