What is Instant Messaging?
Instant Messaging (IM) is real-time text communication between two people online.
What is Meebo?
Meebo is a Web-based service which allows Library users and visitors to ask questions of a CSP Reference Librarian through online Instant Messaging via a widget on our Web site.
Do I need to Log In to use Meebo?
Absolutely not. Remain anonymous or click where it says Edit Nickname to identify yourself.
How do I use Meebo Instant Messaging?
Your question goes into the smaller white box with the text "Type here and hit enter to send a private message." Once you've typed your question and hit Enter, a Reference Librarian will respond as soon as possible (not necessarily immediately) during normal Reference Hours. These hours are: Monday-Thursday: 10-8, Friday: 10-5, Saturday: 12-5, and Sunday: 4-8.
Who will see my message?
Only the Reference Librarian on duty. Other students and staff will never see your communications via Meebo Reference Chat.
When can I send you an instant message?
Chat Reference is only available during normal Reference hours: Monday-Thursday: 10-8, Friday: 10-5, Saturday: 12-5, and Sunday: 4-8. Even during these times, Reference Chat may not be available due to various circumstances. If you enter a question and don't hear back in 5 minutes, call Reference at (651) 641-8812.
What do I do when Meebo is offline?
You can contact the Reference Desk via email: firstname.lastname@example.org
, and a Reference Librarian will get back to you as soon as possible, usually the next day. Alternatively, you can wait until normal Reference Hours resume to contact us via Instant Message, phone, or in person.
Why can't I see the Meebo box?
If you are using your own computer you will need to download the latest Adobe Flash player to see/use the widget. It is available for download at http://www.adobe.com/go/getflash/
. If you are on a CSP University computer and you can't see Meebo please email email@example.com
. Because the Meebo widget uses Adobe Flash player it may not work on mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets.
Why can't I type anything into the box? Why doesn't the widget do anything when I hit Enter?
The Meebo widget occasionally has problems loading due to various reasons, depending on the hardware and software you are using. If Meebo is not working for you, first try to refresh your Web browser. If that doesn't help, try a different Web browser. If you are still having problems, contact the Reference Desk via phone (651) 641-8812 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
Is there anything I can't ask?
We aim to help you with your information needs, whatever they may be, but reserve the right to refuse service if the user is being abusive or if the question is inappropriate. If we think someone else can better answer your question, we will refer you to another department or institution.
