  • New database trial! ProQuest Literature Online: "Literature Online is the leading online resource for the study and teaching of literature in English. It is a fully integrated service that combines the texts of over 350,000 works of literature with huge resources of criticism and reference. When combined with the MLA International Bibliography add-on module, Literature Online is the only resource which offers single-point searching of the two leading literary indexes, MLA and ABELL, linked to a growing collection of 150 full-text literary journals...MLA offers an index to working papers, conference proceedings, reference works, and literature in non-English languages; ABELL indexes critical editions of literary works, book reviews, and essay collections."<

    • New database trial! ProQuest MLA: "The Modern Language Association (MLA) International Bibliography, a leading annual bibliography of books and articles on modern languages and literatures, linguistics, folklore, and other related topics, has been produced since 1921. Coverage includes literature from all over the world - Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and North and South America. The MLA International Bibliography covers more than 4,400 academic journals, indexing more than 65,000 books and articles annually for a total of more than 1.6 million records."
    • New book donations! Thank you to Chuck Nuckles and Richard Kagan! Visit our New Books display shelves to see portions of this collection which includes books about China, Japan, and other Asian countries. The books will be on display until after Easter Break and feature several areas of interest including history and explorations, classic art, handcrafts, architecture, religions of the region including Christianity, global perspectives on business skills/business enevironments/business impacts, marketing, etiquette, and several novels.  It is a fascinating collection that shows the breadth of the region?s dynamic life.

    • JSTOR has updated its search pages! Pay special attention to the Linking Enhancements: "In addition to already-existing links to articles in JSTOR that are referenced within a given article ("reference linking"), information about other articles in JSTOR that in-turn cite a given article ("forward linking") is now displayed. Also displayed are links to articles by authors with the same name as the authors of the article. To further aid in resource discovery, we also provide "forward linking" via Google Scholar which will enable users to see if an article has been cited by others in articles not necessarily present in JSTOR."

    • New trial: "SPORTDiscus with Full Text is the world's most comprehensive source of full text for sports & sports medicine journals, providing full text for more than 415 journals indexed in SPORTDiscus. Of those, nearly 250 have cover-to-cover indexing in SPORTDiscus. With more than 700,000 full-text articles dating back to 1985, SPORTDiscus with Full Text is the definitive research tool for all areas of sports and sports medicine literature." You can find it on our Trial Databases page.
    • New database: Atlas of Minnesota, Online Edition  from the Center for Rural Policy and Development "...features social, demographic, and economic data in map form at the county and school district level."

    • Another new trial: InfoTracAcademic OneFile. You can find it on our Trial Databases page.
    • Concordia has a new trial for the month of October: Access World News (NewsBank).
      Description: "Access World News from NewsBank provides full-text information and perspectives from over 600 U.S. and over 700 international sources, each with its own distinctive focus offering diverse viewpoints on local, regional and world issues. Never before could researchers pinpoint information so easily for one source or country, or any combination specified by the user." Please take a look at it from the Trial Databases page, and then let us know what you think.
    • The reference eBook titles included in Concordia's subscription to Oxford Reference Online are now searchable both through the Oxford Reference Online interface (find it on the Databases page) and through CLICnet, our consortium's catalog of books, eBooks, etc.

    • Concordia University's 2006-2007 Book of the Year is The World is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century, Expanded Edition, by Thomas L. Freidman. Take a look at the Book of the Year Study Guide web page which includes--along many other pieces of information--a bibliography of related titles.
    • Concordia now subscribes to the ACLS History E-Book Project. Check it out on our databases pages.
    • Check out our current Trial Databases page. The latest trial, availabe from 09/14 until 09/28 is the Facts on File Online Reference Database. Please let us know what you think
    • Our Faculty Publications page has been updated! Please take a look and also let us know about new publications which can be featured here.
    • Along with the rest of the campus, the Library Technology Center is converting its website to the new content management system.  This was a huge project simply because the library website has so many pages and so many links. We look forward to making our new library webpages available to the Concordia community sometime this month. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us here

    • Browse our quarterly lists of new materials.  (Most recent list: 01/01/06 - 03/31/06)
    • We have a new EBSCOhost database: Teacher Reference Center (TRC). Try searching this resource for bibliographic information (citations) in areas such as assessment, best practices, continuing education, current pedogogical research, curriculum development, elementary education, higher education, instructional media, language arts, literacy standards, school administration, science/mathematics, and teacher education. 
    • CSP now subscribes to Grove Art Online. This database offers web access to the entire text of The Dictionary of Art, ed. Jane Turner (1996, 34 vols.) and The Oxford Companion to Western Art, ed. Hugh Brigstocke (2001). Search or browse articles, thumbnail art images and line drawings displayed in the text of articles, and image links.
    •  A new trial for the month of May: Lexis Nexis Government Periodicals Index. This index provides access to thoroughly indexed bibliographical information about articles in U.S. government periodicals. Concordia faculty, staff, and students can contact the reference desk for the username and password for access to this database.

    • A new trial for the month of April: ACLS History E-Book Project
      This electronic resource includes over 1230 full-text, cross-searchable books in the field of history selected  by historians for their continuing importance to students and scholars.  The project includes both in-print and out-of print books and adds 250 titles a year. It is a collaboration of the American Council of Learned Societies, various constituent members of the ACLS (AHA, OAH, AAS,  ASA, LASA, MESA, RSA, and SHOT, ) and nearly 75 publishers.  Areas include: African, American, Asian, Latin American, European (Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance, and Modern), Middle Eastern, World/Comparative, Byzantine/Mediterranean and  Australasian/Oceanian history, plus history of the Native Peoples of the Americas and of Science and Technology.

    • Take a look at our new Faculty Publications page. It is a work in progress, but we would like to start highlighting our faculty's recent publications. Please let us know about other recent publications, so we can showcase them on this page.

    • H.W. Wilson's Play Index trial is available through Minitex (through 30 April, 2006):
      Play Index covers virtually every important play ever written, from the works of contemporary playwrights to classic and historical plays in today's collections and anthologies.
      -Find citations to some 30,000 plays published individually or in collections from 1949 to the present in the convenient electronic form patrons prefer.
      -Search over 500 monologues for auditions or course assignments.
      -Limit your results to plays with a specific number of male and/or female roles, or size of total cast.
      -Search for plays appropriate for preK-6, grades 7-12, and adult.
      -A descriptive annotation summarizes the plot and indicates any musical requirements:  chorus, singing, dancing etc., and indicates number of sets, noting whether scenery requirements are interior or exterior.
      -Covers a wide range of plays written in or translated into English, including one-act plays, pageants, plays in verse, radio and television plays, and classic drama.
      -Search for plays by title; author; subject (culture conflict, marriage); style (symbolism, experimental theater); genre (comedy, melodrama, musical); cast type; and more.

    • Yet another Trial Database!
      Women and Social Movements in the United States "...brings together books, images, documents, scholarly essays, commentaries, and bibliographies documenting the history of women's activism in public life. The database is edited by the project's creators, Kathryn Kish Sklar and Thomas Dublin, who are faculty at the State University of New York at Binghamton.  They are assisted by an editorial board of leading women's history scholars from across the U.S."

    • Recycle with Tetra Delta
      Tetra Delta, the CSP student affiliate of the American Chemical Society, has started a recycling program on campus. Please join them in being environmentally conscious and recycle your newspaper, office paper, cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles, and metal (foil, lids) in their special container in the Pearson Commons (they also have receptacles in other locations on campus). Thank you, Tetra Delta, for your efforts! The campus appreciates your work!
    • Customize Google Scholar for your library!
      It is now possible to customize your Google Scholar searches to show Concordia University's library holdings. You can easily customize your Google Scholar searches by following the directions in this document.
    • New Database(s):
      Making of America (Cornell University holdings) and Making of America (University of Michigan holdings): "...digital librar[ies] of primary sources in American social history from the antebellum period through reconstruction. The collection[s] [are] particularly strong in the subject areas of education, psychology, American history, sociology, religion, and science and technology...[and] currently contain approximately 9,500 books and 50,000 journal articles with 19th century imprints. For more details about the project, see About MoA. Making of America is made possible by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation."
