Concordia's Hmong Youth Program Receives $10,000 Grant
Concordia University has received a $10,000 Champions for Health Kids grant from the General Mills Foundation for a new program designed to help Hmong young youth adopt a healthier lifestyle. The cross-disciplinary grant proposal was developed by Sally Baas, Director of the Southeast Asian Teacher (SEAT) Licensure Program and Hmong Culture and Language Program, and Rick Benson, Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology Health Sciences.
Under the moniker "The Chicken, the Pig and the Pepper: Gardening for Health," the program will be implemented among the nearly 100 youth who participate in CSP?s Hmong Culture and Language Program, which operates throughout the year. The goal of the program is to develop creative ways to help participants adopt a balanced diet and a physically active lifestyle through the growing of Hmong traditional vegetables and herbs that serve as the basis for creating healthy meals for families.
