Information on Tutors Versus Editors
What the Writing Center can do for you:
Help you organize your ideas
Tell you what isn't clear
Provide guidance for revision: paragraph order, thesis wording and placement, etc.
Help you develop your ideas: where to explain, include examples, provide support
Help you identify and write for a particular audience
Show you how to write from a specific point of view
Tutor you in a specific aspect of writing or grammar: active/passive voice, fragments/run-ons, etc.
What a professional editor can do for you:
- Correct spelling and punctuation
- Fix citations (MLA or APA)
- Revise awkward sentences
- Answer questions about format and style (e.g. headers & footers, margins, italics vs. quotation marks, etc.)
- Complete all work by the deadline you give him/her
- Answer individual questions by phone
- Make corrections within your document
