Information on Tutors Versus Editors

What the Writing Center can do for you:

  • Help you organize your ideas
  • Tell you what isn't clear
  • Provide guidance for revision:  paragraph order, thesis wording and placement, etc.
  • Help you develop your ideas:  where to explain, include examples, provide support
  • Help you identify and write for a particular audience
  • Show you how to write from a specific point of view
  • Tutor you in a specific aspect of writing or grammar:  active/passive voice, fragments/run-ons, etc.

What a professional editor can do for you:
      • Correct spelling and punctuation
      • Fix citations (MLA or APA)
      • Revise awkward sentences
      • Answer questions about format and style (e.g. headers & footers, margins, italics vs. quotation marks, etc.)
      • Complete all work by the deadline you give him/her
      • Answer individual questions by phone
      • Make corrections within your document
    • Writing Center tutor working with a student on his first draft.

      Tutor and Tutee
But words are things, and a small drop of ink, falling like dew upon a thought, produces that which makes thousands, perhaps millions, think. --Lord Byron
