F.A.Q
UMOJA
What is the benefit of UMOJA?
The mission of UMOJA is to:
1) foster academic achievement and service
2) address issues and concerns affecting students of color;
3) promote an understanding and appreciation of cultural differences, and
4) to create unity among students of multi-cultural heritage at CSP and the community
UMOJA provides opportunities for 1) African and African American students to develop and build leadership and development skills; 2) for students of all races, backgrounds and interests to interact, collaborate with, and get to know and work with African and African American students; and 3) the campus community to learn more about the African and African American culture, history, traditions, contributions and experiences.
What does UMOJA stand for?
United Minds of Joint Action
How did UMOJA come about?
African American students wanted an organization to fulfill the mission described above. They expressed the need for an organization that represented the African American students, and gradually the organization was begun, with a mission, constitution and proposed activities. (I’m not sure of the start-up date for UMOJA but I know it’s over 20-30 years old).
