PLUS Time

Playful Learning with University Students (PLUS Time) is an elementary-age after-school program located at Liberty Plaza housing development, about two and a half miles east of campus.  The program, five days a week, is staffed and developed by Concordia students through the College of Education - although students of any major are welcome to volunteer!  For more information or to volunteer, contact Prof. Michele Pickel at x8786 or pickel@csp.edu.

Dorothy Day Center

On the fourth Saturday of every month, a group from Concordia volunteers at the Dorothy Day Center in downtown St Paul, helping to make and serve breakfast to people experiencing homelessness.  Sign up sheet located on the "CU Make a Difference" bulletin board across from CL 214, or in the Office of Service-Learning.

Immersion Trips

Immersion, a program of the University-branch YMCA, is a fun and educational alternative trip experience that happens over winter, spring, and summer breaks.  The mission of Immersion is to take an in-depth exploration of a social justice issue in another city in the US or at an international destination.  Through seminars and a week-long trip, we challenge ourselves to evaluate our role in local, national, and global communities.  For more information (to participate or even lead a trip), contact the Office of Service-Learning or Jon DeVries at the University YMCA at 612-676-7714 or JDeVries@YMCAmpls.org

National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week

Each year, one week before Thanksgiving, hundreds of school, communities and cities take part in a nationwide effort to bring greater awareness to the problems of hunger and homelessness.  Participating in this week not only brings greater awareness to our community but also helps to promote the national endeavor to end hunger and homelessness.  Did you know?  According to the Minnesota Coalition for the Homeless, more than 8600 people are homeless on any given night in Minnesota, and an additional 12,700 are at risk of losing their housing in the immediate future.

Students Mobilize to End Homelessness

Students from colleges and universities throughout the Twin Cities area join together to work toward ending homelessness in Minnesota.  In 2004-2005, they sponsored a Summit on Homelessness in the fall and a Sleep-Out at the State Capitol in the spring.  In 2005-2006, they sponsored an open-mic style benefit concert  (HOPE: Homelessness Outreach Performance Event) at Minnesota Business Academy, supported by several members of the X-Committee and several VISTAs, in November.  Contact the Office of Service-Learning for more information.

TRUTH: Together Reaching Unity with The Homeless (student club)

Interested in making a difference?  A group of students called TRUTH (Together Reaching Unity with The Homeless) are beginning to form together to become educated about homelessness and to make a difference in the lives of homeless people.  Advisor:  Prof. Dave Woodard.  Contact Alicia Ulring (ulringa@csp.edu).

National Environmental Awareness Week

Each year either the week following or the week preceding April 22nd (Earth Day), communities across the nation celebrate Environmental Awareness Week.  Find out your "ecological footprint" (or how many earths it would take to support the world's population if everyone had equal environmental impact as you) by taking the Ecological Footprint Quiz at http://www.earthday.net/footprint/ and then discover with CSP how we can all lessen our impact and live more sustainably!  Environmental Awareness Week at CSP is sponsored by the Office of Service-Learning and Tetra Delta, a club/organization for chemistry students.
