I.L. Course Catalog: Education Classes
Databases This class will teach students the basics of database searching. Information on keyword searching, Boolean operators, and subject headings will be presented. Students will learn how to obtain articles not available online in full text.
Web Resources The Supplementary Websites page provides links to various tools for finding reputable websites. This class will show you how to evaluate web sources and how they can enhance your research.
CLICnet Students will be taught how to search CLICnet, the online catalog. They will learn how to use the different features of the catalog such as searching for juvenile and curriculum books, requesting books from other CLICnet libraries, and checking their account.
Reference Resources Students will learn which print and electronic reference resources are available for education, special education, and early childhood. They will learn their purpose, how to use them, and the best time in the research process to use them.
Non-Print Sources Students will be made aware of the non-print resources that are useful in research such as audio-visual materials, computer software, and people. They will be taught how to search for audio-visual materials in CLICnet.
Outside Resources Students will be made aware of resources outside of Concordia's library that may be helpful in their research. Sources covered will be other library catalogs (such as MnLINK), digital collections, listservs, research guides, government resources, and human resources.
Print and Online Journals Students will be made aware of important scholarly journals in the field of education that Concordia has available either in print or online. Students will be taught how to search for these journals in CLICnet and in the databases. They will also be given information about Interlibrary Loan--what it is and how to use it.
Assignment-Specific Classes Instructors may contact a librarian to develop or adapt a class to a specific assignment.
What Is the Curriculum Center and How Do I Use It? An introduction to the Curriculum Center: the subject areas included, how to interpret the call numbers, and types for materials. Time of presentation: 30-60 minutes.
What Do I Look For in a Textbook Series? Criteria for textbook evaluation for elementary or secondary education. Emphasis is on looking for gender fairness and cultural diversity in addition to other standard criteria for evaluating textbooks. Time of presentation: 30-45 minutes.
How Do I Create a Thematic Unit? Information on how to develop a thematic unit incorporating several subject areas. Time of presentation: 30-45 minutes.
Teaching the Faith Resources An extensive look at resources for Teaching the Faith, including curriculum and juvenile materials, databases, periodicals and reference materials. Time of presentation: 1-2 hours
Help! I Need to Write a Lesson Plan For _______ Information on elementary or secondary resources available for developing a lesson plan. Time of presentation: 30-60 minutes
Periodicals: How to Find What You Need Information on the use of the paper periodical collection, microfilm collection, and databases for education. Time of presentation: 30-60 minutes
