I.L. Course Catalog: Communications and Sociology Classes

Databases
Learn how to access the discipline-specific databases available to Concordia's faculty and students. This class covers the essentials of effective search methods: using key words, subject headings, and Boolean terminology. The class also covers how to use the virtual library databases on or off campus and how to find evaluated full-text articles. This course would be useful first as a general course but can also be custom-designed to a specific course or assignment. CLICnet

CLICnet
Use Concordia's online catalog and understand the use of call numbers to locate materials.  Search by title, author, keyword and subject headings and work with the new interface to search and acquire resources needed.

Reference
Become familiar with reference sources such as encyclopedias, indexes and series that would be useful for the study of communications and sociology.  Cover general tips of what types of materials to use and when to use them.  Understand how to locate materials in the library using call numbers, browsing techniques and the Virtual Library Research Tools section.

Web Resources
The Supplementary Websites page provides links to various tools for finding reputable websites.  This class will show you how to evaluate web sources and how they can enhance your research.

Non-Print Source
Use the PBS database as a springboard for studying the many facets of communication and sociology study.  Search for other available non-print media, recorded live interviews, videos, DVDS, sound recordings, and computer software.  The PBS video database provides not only videos, but also sound clips, articles, scripted interviews, and lesson plans.

Journals: Print and Online
Review electronic and print journals available to Concordia students including scholarly, popular, and trade journals. Understand the referee/peerreview process and the basics of where, when, and how journals could be used effectively.

Sources Outside of Concordi
Although Concordia, in cooperation with the holdings of the consortium (CLIC), has access to many resources, other resources are available. This workshop covers discipline-specific digital collections, people resources, listservs, government resources, public and other university libraries, specialized agencies, and resource centers.

Assignment-Specific Classes
Let us help you and your students find resources whether it is background reading, specific dates or personalities, a distinctive subject area, or a specific class assignment of your choosing.  The library liaison can help in designing the assignment, show students how to utilize the library effectively and modify information literacy classes to meet your needs.
-Interactive: Interactive displays and activities can be created and customized to fit or highlight an event, assignment or organization.  Add another dimension to student learning by discussing resources related to a course, topic, special event, or person.  For example:  National Media Week--Work closely with a librarian to create awareness-level learning for you, your students, and the Concordia community in general.
-Diversity & Multicultural:
Incorporate the perspectives and utilize the resources resources of diverse cultures, countries and specialized groups.

To schedule a class, send an email to reference@csp.edu .  In order to customize/maximize learning objectives for you and your students, please schedule your classes at least two weeks in advance if possible.
